Golden Mountain Dog: A cross between a Golden Retriever and a Bernese Mountain Dog
The absolute perfect combination of two amazing breeds. Koda came after Cooper. He was my second dog and the other dog breed I had to have: a Bernese Mountain Dog. I have thought about breeding Bernese Mountain Dogs for several years now but was always so saddened by their short life expectancy. But Bernese Mountain Dogs are too special to not breed for that reason, and as I began to research more, I started seeing a few breeders around the US who had begun to breed Golden Mountain Dogs — a cross of two of my favorite breeds. One of my biggest reasons for beginning to breed this cross is for the hope of an increased life expectancy. Golden Mountain Dogs’ life expectancy is 9-12 years as opposed to a purebred Bernese Mountain Dogs’ life expectancy of only 6-8 years.
We had our first litter of Golden Mountain Dog puppies in April 2023 and these puppies are every bit as amazing as I hoped they would be. Of course I had to keep a puppy to be able to experience this amazing cross of breeds for myself. Dutton has been the best puppy I’ve ever raised— and I’ve raised a lot of puppies at this point! He is very easy to train, he is a lot more laid back than my Golden Retriever puppies I have kept and raised. He is eager to please, loves attention, he isn’t mouthy like a Golden Retriever puppy, he loves going for long walks and chasing tennis balls but his energy level is much lower than a Golden Retriever’s. After getting his daily exercise, he loves curling up on the couch next to me to snuggle. He is so calm, confident and loyal — and I have heard equally as amazing things about his siblings. They are proving to be absolutely wonderful family dogs. It is safe to say I will continue breeding Golden Mountain Dogs for years to come.
